In this week’s Discussion, you are asked to consider how alignment relates to various research projects, including dissertations. Alignment refers to all aspects of the project being consistent.

An important point to remember as you discuss research projects and alignment is that you should be protective of your own research ideas. Out of an abundance of caution, you should avoid sharing specifics of your projects to eliminate the possibility of colleagues “borrowing” ideas (whether consciously or not). For example, you might say you are interested in domestic violence, but do not give details of how you are approaching the topic.

  • Consider the issues of alignment, the IRB application, and the literature review you are doing this week.
  • Then consider how all these elements relate to a research study or a dissertation. (Do not give any specifics about your dissertation project.)
  • What do the literature review, methods, and the IRB application tell us about a given research project?
  • How do you determine if these three elements align? What might misalignment look like, and what are potential consequences of it?
