Persuasive Writing Assignment 5 marks = Knowledge 10 marks = Communication 20 marks = Thinking 10 marks = Application THE TASK:

Take ONE of the topics below and construct an informal persuasive response based on your knowledge / current events. 

STRUCTURE: ◦ The introduction must have a clear thesis ◦ Total Body Paragraphs = 1 – 2 paragraphs (3 paragraphs would be going above and beyond) ◦ 2 details/paragraph in support of your argument

◦ 1 detail/paragraph exploring the other side of the argument

◦ In addition to using your opinion, you must also bring other current cultural events, people, etc. to support your point. Be sure to cite where the information comes from!

◦ The conclusion must properly summarize your argument ◦ Persuasive techniques and tone must be evident ◦ Your response should be approx. 2 pages MAX! ◦ Use proper MLA guidelines / citations

Topics:

1) Fear can be a pretty powerful tool. It can either hold us back or motivate us. Choose a famous person (past or present) that was forced to act from fear. How did it turn out? What were the effects?

2) Ambition can be looked at in a positive or negative way. Think of a famous leader that you have read / heard about who you would consider to be ambitious. Has their ambition led to a negative or positive outcome?

3) In today’s society women are considered equal to men. Choose a famous woman whom you think could be considered a “warrior woman.” What makes her so? What has she done to gain that title?

4) There is a saying that “justice is in the eye of the beholder” meaning that there is no objective view of justice. Take an event (past or present) and argue whether you believe justice was served / denied.

Planning & Writing Tips: – You need to think critically about the issues being presented. – Which side do you feel is stronger? – Identify and use only the most convincing evidence to support your side. – Provide strong evidence to support your opinion. – Conclude with a restatement of what you want your reader to believe.

STRUCTURE OF A PERSUASIVE ARGUMENT: Introductory Paragraph ◦ Grab the reader’s attention by using a “hook.” ◦ Give an overview of the argument. ◦ Close with a thesis statement that reveals the position to be argued. Body Paragraphs

◦ Topic sentence explaining your SPECIFIC point. ◦ Each body paragraph should focus on one piece of evidence. ◦ Within each paragraph, provide sufficient supporting details.

◦ Use transitions to move from one point to the next. Opposing View Paragraph ◦ Describe and then refute the key points of the opposing view. Concluding Paragraph

◦ Restate and reinforce the thesis and supporting evidence. ◦ Personal comment or call to action. FINAL SUBMISSION Format should be a written piece of approximately 2 pages for me to evaluate. You should follow the guidelines on structure and content very closely, and make sure to use lots of persuasive techniques!
