Essay Prompt

Select one literary theory (or two interconnected theories) to help you develop your own essay concept and write an essay that advances your own interpretation of one of the short works listed below. (View the video below for an explanation and discussion of this prompt.)

Essay Requirements

Your paper must include:

an opening that gets the reader interested, provides necessary information (i.e. a brief summary of the story or poem), and a thesis statement that reflects the focus and scope of your paper.
at least four well-organized and developed body paragraphs that provide clear topic sentences, credible support, and thoughtful analysis.
integration of quotes and/or paraphrases from the story or poem of focus to support your ideas and discussion
integration of reference sources as necessary
a conclusion that sums up your analysis and offers the reader something interesting to reflect on.
a Works Cited AND/OR Works Consulted page (cite the sources that helped you analyze the story or poem: those you used directly, cite under Works Cited; those that informed your paper or parts of it but you did not directly use, cite under Works Consulted)

Your paper must be:

in MLA format.
free of any major grammatical and topographical errors.
completely your own work.
