Essay
Essays are built in layers: Starting with a template for the layout of an essay, then applying a rhetorical strategy, inserting your thesis and topics into the template and support (names, numbers, paraphrases, and/or quotations) from the sources, and document those sources using proper Modern Language Association (MLA) rules and formatting instructions for the essay.
Assignment:
- Read the assignment carefully and watch for key actions and requirements. See “Blooms Taxonomy” PowerPoint for the higher critical thinking words. The action verbs requiring the highest level of thought are in the top three levels of Bloom’s illustration.
- In the Step Three: Resources folder, click on the “1.1-Unit One Readings – Understanding Assignments” document. Copy the URL(s) and paste the URL(s) into your browser. This will take you to a specific section of Purdue University’s Online Writing Lab (OWL) that addresses how to analyze an assignment.
- Read the “1.0-Body Paragraphs” PowerPoint in this unit. This is the template (blueprint) of the essay.
- Read the three “Process” PowerPoints. This is the rhetorical strategy for the essay in this unit.
- Read “0.2-MLA Handout (8th Ed Update)” in the Resources folder for proper Modern Language Association (MLA) formatting instructions for the essay.
- Read “Revision Tips” PowerPoint for suggestions on revising the essay to avoid losing points on the grade sheet (rubric).
- Compose the three-paragraph essay required for this unit.
