For this assignment, each student will submit an analysis of the business scenario for the ABC corporation. The ABC corporation business scenario is based on a fictitious company that is developing a database management system (DBMS) for storage of product, customer, and sales data. Audience: upper-level business students.

Project Prompts

The ABC corporation business scenario provides a foundation in which to examine the components of a database management system (DBMS), development of a system for business purposes and data collection, manipulation, and storage. The ABC corporation analysis should discuss the use of database management systems in business and examine how a DBMS presents a centralized view of data that can be accessed by multiple users. The written essay should be a minimum of 1,000 words in length and follow the APA formatting standards.

Business Scenario

The ABC corporation is a newly established company and the owner is looking for an efficient method of collecting, storing, and manipulating data. The corporation offers a variety of pet supplies and is initially a retailer that is currently selling products only online. As the corporation grows, it plans to also include physical retail locations in which to add services to the company’s offerings.

As a startup business, the ABC corporation needs to implement a database management system to allow the collection and sharing of business data among the employees; thus, the database management system should allow for multiple users. The corporation is currently gathering information about database management systems and seeking a contractor to create and implement the system. Business data will be organized in a logical manner and will be retrieved using a client-server network.

In your analysis provide the ABC corporation with information on database management systems and a recommendation from a contractor’s perspective. Information you are providing the ABC corporation should include the following:

  • Provide a definition of a database management system (DBMS) and discuss the purpose(s) in business.
  • Introduce the business scenario to analyze and discuss the benefits of implementing a database management system.
  • Describe what business data the company would benefit from collecting and manipulating.
  • Explain how a company uses a database management system to manage data collection, manipulate data and realize benefits from usage of a database management system.
  • Discuss the components of a DBMS and the process of developing a DBMS for implementation.
  • Discuss why companies utilize various systems for domestic and global business functions.

Using Sources

Sources for locating the information system(s) employed by a company may include the company’s corporate website, LinkedIn SlideShare website (which details a company’s profile and information systems), corporate SEC filings, and public corporate documents on information system projects and implementation.

You may refer to the course material for supporting evidence, but you must also use at least three credible, outside sources and cite them using APA format. Please include a mix of both primary and secondary sources, with at least one source from a scholarly peer-reviewed journal. If you use any Study.com lessons as sources, please also cite them in APA (including the lesson title and instructor’s name).

  • Primary sources are first-hand accounts such as interviews, advertisements, speeches, company documents, statements, and press releases published by the company in question.
  • Secondary sources come from peer-reviewed scholarly journals, such as the Journal of Management. You may use like JSTOR, Google Scholar, and Social Science Research Network to find articles from these journals. Secondary sources may also come from reputable websites with .gov, .edu, or .org in the domain. (Wikipedia is not a reputable source, though the sources listed in Wikipedia articles may be acceptable.)

    • Choose a scholarly peer-reviewed journal article published within the last 5 years and related to the health condition or health behavior in your scenario. The Chamberlain Library is your best place to obtain this article. Cite this in APA 7th edition format in this section of the assignment.
  • Describe in detail the plan for teaching this patient in the scenario.
    • Include the nurse’s assessment of learning needs and readiness to learn.
  • Identify a mHealth app that could benefit the patient, considering the teaching/learning needs you identified.
    • Describe the app including the mHealth app name, purpose, intended audience, mobile device(s) upon which it will operate, and where to download or obtain it. Add any other information you believe would be pertinent to this situation.
    • Include a working link if it is to be downloaded from a website in the area indicated on the template.
    • Make sure to add a citation for this mHealth app in APA format.  The directions and example of how to cite a mobile app are located on page 340 of the APA Manual, 7th edition.
    • At the end of the Milestone 1 Template there is a References page where you will list your 2 references.  One will be the mHealth app reference (also on page 340, APA Manual) and the other will be your scholarly article reference.

This week in Chapter 2 we cover Organization Theory. Usually, I teach this to my graduate students over the course of 14 weeks (PAD 705). Graduate students do what academics call a deep dive in covering the concepts mentioned in this chapter. This undergraduate class only allows one week to differentiate the key concepts and time periods in management theory. You are given the abbreviated version in Chapter 2, so read carefully.  Classical organization theory has its beginnings in the late 1800s and down through the early 1900s. I argue that it is still undergoing development today. Over time, organization theory evolved from Scientific and Bureaucratic Management Theory into Human Relations, Structural, Systems, and more recently National Performance Review.  If I were to work on a textbook revision to this one, I would examine how much technology has evolved into the modern connectivity we take for granted today.

     Using examples from the chapter, you must discuss how these theories evolved over time in two key areas:

1) How did the different theorists view/explain the role of the organization?

2) How did the different theorists explain the role of the worker?

3) Tell me about the organization you work for now, in the context of this chapter. Maybe you want to tell us about a prior job, to make some of the points in the chapter. Your choice. Tell me about its management style.

4) What organizational theory do you feel is effective and why?

     Your answers should cover all different theories mentioned in Chapter 2.

Handling of British Airways’ Data Breach

 

The Information Commissioner’s Office in the UK on Monday revealed its plan to slap British Airways (BA) with a £183.4 million ($230M) fine over a 2018 data breach, one of the ICO’s biggest fines since the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) came into effect. The breach is believed to have impacted 500,000 people, the regulator noted.  The breach, which BA disclosed in September 2018, saw people visiting its website being diverted to a fraudulent site, where details including name, billing address, email address and payment information were harvested.  The data breach highlighted why data strategy and governance is more critical than ever.  Very basic security principles were not instituted, practical steps were missed in securing their data, and processes were not established to safeguard their most sensitive customer data.

Provide a 5-7 page paper (formatted according to APA guidelines) including a minimum of seven journal articles providing an overview of the British Airways data breach, regulations violated, and other similar breaches. Topics to consider in the paper may include:

  • an overview of the data breach
  • what data was stolen and at what volume
  • which security principles and guidelines they missed/violated
  • what in GDPR did they violate
  • what could they have done to prevent the issue
  • what would you do, knowing what you know about data strategy and governance, once you learn of the data breach
  • what are the critical learnings from the data breach

These topics should be answered at a minimum, but the goal is to provide a detailed analysis of the data breach and tie it to the core principles we have learned up to this point in our class.
