           I would like to welcome you to a short tutorial to assist you in completing your week three healthcare policy assignment. The assignment guidelines and rubric are located under the week three module. In the healthcare policy assignment, you will assess the impact of health legislation on nursing practice and communicate your analysis to you peers.

GovTrack.us provides a list of federal health bills that are currently in process in congressional committees. This assignment will be in the form of a PowerPoint presentation containing no more than 12 slides. For those of you who are not familiar with developing a PowerPoint presentation, there is a link to a short training tutorial to guide you through this process, as well as a list of PowerPoint best practices.

The link and information is located in the directions for the assignment. The list of main topics for your slides is also contained in this area. The healthcare policy assignment rubric is contained in the guidelines area. It is a good final step to check the rubric prior to submission to assure you have included all vital parts of the assignment.

There are prompts under each listed criteria on the rubric to assist you when designing your presentation

. The references slide should include the bill source in APA format and any other source used, however, these would be optional.

It is always helpful to refer to the APA resources located in the course under resources in the left hand course menu. And then under citation and writing assistance, there you will find the APA resources page with a variety of items to assist you. Be sure to cite your source directly on the slide.

However, you can choose a smaller font or a different color choice for the citations. Your last slide will be your references slide. Please list this in APA format. However, do not be concerned with line spacing or indents as these are not really possible in PowerPoint. Be creative and think about your audience when designing your presentation.

Use the best practices for a PowerPoint presentation as your guide.

3. This assignment will be in the format of a PowerPoint presentation (Bullet points may be used).

4. You are educating your peers through this presentation regarding a federal bill you believe may be of interest to nurses.

6. Choose a health-related federal bill of interest. Read through the bill and develop a summary in your own words. Include the bill number and name.

“Take a close look at yourself in a mirror. Beneath your dashing good looks churns a hidden universe of networked machinery. The machinery includes a sophisticated scaffolding of interlocking bones, a netting of sinewy muscles, a good deal of specialized fluid, and a collaboration of internal organs chugging away in darkness to keep you alive. A sheet of high-tech self-healing sensory material that we call skin seamlessly covers your machinery in a pleasing package.

And then there’s your brain. Three pounds of the most complex materials we’ve discovered in the universe. This is the mission control center that drives the whole operation, gathering dispatches through small portals in the armored bunker of the skull.

Your brain is built of cells called neurons and glia – hundreds of billions of them. Each one of these cells is as complicated as a city. And each one contains the entire human genome and traffics billions of molecules in intricate economies. Each cell sends electrical impulses to other cells, up to hundreds of times per second. In this assignment we will be focusing on the First Amendment to the U.S. Constitution.  This is one of the most important parts of the entire document.  Remember the First Amendment includes five key sections and they are: freedom of religion; freedom of speech; freedom of the press; freedom to peacefully assemble; and the freedom to petition government for redress of grievances.  For this assignment you will definitely need The Words We Live By book (pages 130-153).  You are also free to use other reliable and credible sources (do not use Wikipedia and other such sources).  If you are interested in using a source but unsure of its reliability just send me an email and ask.  The Words We Live By book should be mostly all you need.   But again other good and reliable sources can certainly be helpful.  The assignment will have two separate parts and you need to complete both parts in order to be eligible to gain full credit.

Please explain why the First Amendment is important?  Explain each of the five parts of the First Amendment?  How does the First Amendment limit the federal and state governments (in regards to the latter remember “incorporation”)?  Do you think certain kinds of limitations should be put on our constitutional First Amendment rights (remember the First Amendment reads “Congress shall make no law…”)?  How has the U.S. Supreme Court ruled on some cases dealing with First Amendment issues (give at least a few examples from Supreme Court rulings you can find)?
