CRIM 2276: Essay on “Killed for A Horn”

CRIM 2276 Application Essay Guidelines

Purpose: The goal of this assignment is for you to critically apply the materials learned in class to the understanding of real-world issues or topics discussed in the documentary episode. We will watch three documentary episodes available online over the course of the semester. You will then write an application essay connecting course material from that week to the documentary.

Format:

  • 2-3 pages double spaced, Times New Roman size 12, 1 inch margins, uploaded as a Word document (having half a page of your name, course name, date, instructor name, essay title, does not count to the 2 page minimum!)
  • There is a template available under Important Course Materials in Week 1
  • The same general guidelines below can be followed for each essay, though I have listed some more specific questions you may consider for each one.

Guidelines:

  1. First, begin with an introduction paragraph that briefly summarizes the topic(s) covered in the episode. One paragraph means 4-5 sentences. You should not spend an entire page summarizing the content. Focus on the application in the next section!

  1. Second, you will address how these materials illustrate, or can be understood, using course materials. You must use course materials from the appropriate week (i.e. for Essay 1 apply material from Week 4, however you may also draw on previously covered material as well). For each essay you would define in your own words the concept/theory/etc. first, before discussing how it applies to the content you watched. It is helpful to treat each concept/theory as its own paragraph. Within that paragraph define the course material and then apply it. You may consider the question I have listed below as well. Be sure to keep your application and discussion focused at a critical level rather than simply inserting opinion.

Essay 1 Watch Killed for a Horn here.

  • Things to think about (these are just to get you started thinking about application, you are welcome to consider connections beyond the questions I pose here): Consider how globalization is related to the crime(s) discussed in the video. Pick a theory (or more) to apply to explaining this global crime. What is happening at the micro, meso, macro, and/or international level to help us understand this issue. You may see different theories working at different levels.

Essay 2 Watch Yemen and the Global Arms Trade here.

  • Things to think about: Consider what types of arms markets are represented and what factors are connected to weapons trafficking. Role of corruption/officials. Do some of the issues in combatting drug trafficking also apply to weapons trafficking. Role of terrorism and related concepts. Role of globalization. Application of theories.

Essay 3: Pick one of the following three episodes and apply the material from the week on organized crime and the second topic listed.

  • Option 1: The Rivera Maya Gang—can apply organized crime and cyber crime
  • Option 2: The New Mafia in Italy—can apply organized crime human trafficking
  • Option 3: Cement’s Dirty Business—can apply organized crime and environmental crime
  • Things to think about: As a starting point you can think about what characteristics of the definition of organized crime are present/group organization. What crimes were the groups engaged in and do these represent the provision of illicit services, goods, or infiltration of legitimate business or government. Role of corruption. Also consider concepts from the week on cyber crime, environmental crime, or human trafficking as appropriate.

  1. Finish your paper with a conclusion paragraph that briefly restates your beliefs and how the course material you have written about has influenced them, and any other observations that you can make about the concepts and or event/issue (for example, a contradiction in applying the concept to the issue/event, something interesting you learned/noticed, something that can be filled out with a concept/theory from a different part of the course).

Rubric: Your grade for this assignment will be based on readability, inclusion of all the elements here (following these instructions), clarity and depth of your summaries, explanation of course content, and application of course materials.

PSYC 295 Literature Review Paper Series: Prospectus

PSYC 295 Literature Review Paper Series: Prospectus

Learning Objectives – What should I get out of/learn how to do through this assignment series?

Outcome 1: Knowledge Base in Psychology

  • Describe psychological knowledge gained from primary source literature.

Outcome 2: Scientific Literacy & Inquiry

  • Find a source of scientific information.
  • Document and conduct a literature search.
  • Identify and describe unanswered questions of a research project.
  • Identify and describe the limitations of a research project.

Outcome 3: Effective Psychological Communication

  • Summarize prior research in APA format.
  • Describe research methodology in APA format.
  • Describe statistical results in APA format.
  • Convey the conclusion/interpretation of a research project in APA format.
  • Discuss potential congruence and incongruence between different research results in APA format.

Background – What contextual information do I need to help me understand this assignment?

For this assignment your going to write a miniature literature review. In the research process, one of the first steps is discovering what information is already out there on your topic. Then you need to develop an understanding of what this information does and does not actually tell you. Often this knowledge is then communicated in a narrative review, called a literature review.  The intended audiences are other academics who will be reading it as part of a grant proposal, dissertation proposal, or in a journal article.

The review you will write will be modeled after a stand-alone literature review that you might see in a scientific journal, but on a much smaller scale. In this review, you will have to answer a question involving at least two constructs. At least one of these constructs must be unquestionably psychological in nature. For example, your review could ask the question what the relationship is between anxiety levels and self-efficacy. In this review you will have to summarize at least 5 original research reports in depth (see rubric) as your main sources and use at least 3 additional sources for supporting information. These additional sources can be other types of peer reviewed literature (such as meta-analyses, critical review articles, etc.), and should be used to provide background information. If you were using the example topic above, one of these additional resources might be a prior review article defining the construct of self-efficacy.

The writing process for a literature review can be complex and extensive. We are going to break it up into several bite size chunks to help you tackle it one piece at a time.

  • Prospectus (10 pts): Propose your topic and perform a database search to ensure there is sufficient literature on your topic for you to pull from.
  • Literature Review Notebook (10 pts): Have at least 10 articles that you found and categorized into an excel file to document your literature search
  • Annotated Bibliography (10 pts): Have at least 5 of the articles that you are probably going to use read, briefly summarized, and full citations formatted.
  • Final Paper (50 pts): Write your final review article.

Assignment – What do I need to do?

One of the hardest parts of writing (or indeed doing anything) is actually starting. In this assignment you need to “propose” your research topic. This gives you an easier way to start off and helps insure you’re set up for success. You need to come up with a question that your going to try and answer by looking into the scientific literature. This question needs to involve at least two constructs, one of which must be psychological in nature. The other could also be psychological, but if your really interested in neurobiology, social factors, or other areas that affect psychological variables, you could pick such a construct as well.

Next you need to demonstrate that there is sufficient literature for this to be your topic. You need to identify one or more keywords for each construct and conduct a database search. In your database search you need to use the Boolean operator “AND” to link keywords for each construct. This tactic will result in you finding sources that look at both of your constructs. You then will have to describe your database search. Make sure your reader knows what keywords, filters, Boolean operators, and databases you used. Then describe the results of your search in terms of how many hits there were and if said hits appear to relate to your topic based on the titles. If you cannot demonstrate there is enough scientific literature on your question, you will have to find a different topic. How much literature is sufficient is a subjective decision on the part of the instructor, but generally speaking if there are at least 30 potential sources, you should be OK.

Evaluation – How will I be graded?

Your submission will be graded with the following single-point rubric. For each criterion, the maximum number of points possible is listed along with a description of proficient, but not necessarily exemplary, work.   For additional guidance see the example paper which, similar to the rubric, shows you what would constitute proficient, but not necessarily exemplary, work.

Category Points Prompt
Research Question 4 The research question was explicitly stated, and both of the two constructs were identified. At least one of the constructs is unquestionably psychological in nature.
Database Search 3 A database search was described that involved keywords for both constructs linked with the “AND” Boolean operator to ensure any results involve both constructs. The keywords were identified, any filters used were identified, and the number of hits was stated.
APA Style 1 This assignment is correctly formatted in APA Style. No abstract is required or encouraged.
Effective Communication 2 Conventions for organization, formatting, and writing style were proficiently applied. The writing demonstrates a good understanding of the piece’s context, audience, and purpose. Appropriate sources are used, and citations are formatted correctly. The language used is clear, has good fluency, appropriate word choice, and is free of grammatical errors. (Adapted from the AACU Value rubric for effective communication).
