CRIM 2276: Essay on “Killed for A Horn”
CRIM 2276 Application Essay Guidelines
Purpose: The goal of this assignment is for you to critically apply the materials learned in class to the understanding of real-world issues or topics discussed in the documentary episode. We will watch three documentary episodes available online over the course of the semester. You will then write an application essay connecting course material from that week to the documentary.
Format:
- 2-3 pages double spaced, Times New Roman size 12, 1 inch margins, uploaded as a Word document (having half a page of your name, course name, date, instructor name, essay title, does not count to the 2 page minimum!)
- There is a template available under Important Course Materials in Week 1
- The same general guidelines below can be followed for each essay, though I have listed some more specific questions you may consider for each one.
Guidelines:
- First, begin with an introduction paragraph that briefly summarizes the topic(s) covered in the episode. One paragraph means 4-5 sentences. You should not spend an entire page summarizing the content. Focus on the application in the next section!
- Second, you will address how these materials illustrate, or can be understood, using course materials. You must use course materials from the appropriate week (i.e. for Essay 1 apply material from Week 4, however you may also draw on previously covered material as well). For each essay you would define in your own words the concept/theory/etc. first, before discussing how it applies to the content you watched. It is helpful to treat each concept/theory as its own paragraph. Within that paragraph define the course material and then apply it. You may consider the question I have listed below as well. Be sure to keep your application and discussion focused at a critical level rather than simply inserting opinion.
Essay 1 Watch Killed for a Horn here.
- Things to think about (these are just to get you started thinking about application, you are welcome to consider connections beyond the questions I pose here): Consider how globalization is related to the crime(s) discussed in the video. Pick a theory (or more) to apply to explaining this global crime. What is happening at the micro, meso, macro, and/or international level to help us understand this issue. You may see different theories working at different levels.
Essay 2 Watch Yemen and the Global Arms Trade here.
- Things to think about: Consider what types of arms markets are represented and what factors are connected to weapons trafficking. Role of corruption/officials. Do some of the issues in combatting drug trafficking also apply to weapons trafficking. Role of terrorism and related concepts. Role of globalization. Application of theories.
Essay 3: Pick one of the following three episodes and apply the material from the week on organized crime and the second topic listed.
- Option 1: The Rivera Maya Gang—can apply organized crime and cyber crime
- Option 2: The New Mafia in Italy—can apply organized crime human trafficking
- Option 3: Cement’s Dirty Business—can apply organized crime and environmental crime
- Things to think about: As a starting point you can think about what characteristics of the definition of organized crime are present/group organization. What crimes were the groups engaged in and do these represent the provision of illicit services, goods, or infiltration of legitimate business or government. Role of corruption. Also consider concepts from the week on cyber crime, environmental crime, or human trafficking as appropriate.
- Finish your paper with a conclusion paragraph that briefly restates your beliefs and how the course material you have written about has influenced them, and any other observations that you can make about the concepts and or event/issue (for example, a contradiction in applying the concept to the issue/event, something interesting you learned/noticed, something that can be filled out with a concept/theory from a different part of the course).
Rubric: Your grade for this assignment will be based on readability, inclusion of all the elements here (following these instructions), clarity and depth of your summaries, explanation of course content, and application of course materials.
