Case Formulation Mental Health

For this assessment, the student will complete a comprehensive mental health case formulation. This formulation will include an introduction, a body divided into paragraphs, and a conclusion.

This task will help students prepare for mental health nursing practice, in which a deeper understanding of the person is required, beyond the reason for referral for assessment or hospital admission.

By completing this assessment, students will demonstrate the ability to:

  • Develop foundational knowledge in the principles of mental health nursing assessment and care planning including substance use and first episode psychosis
  • Apply knowledge and skills learnt in the subject to plan specialist mental health nursing care utilising principles of case formulation
  • Select and evaluate nursing interventions for mental health service users with high and low prevalence conditions
  • Discuss the role of mental health nursing in the risk of suicide, self-harm and occupational violence
  • Incorporate strengths-based and recovery-focused care into mental health nursing practice.
